Founded in 1886 as "Bedford Amateur Rowing Club" at a meeting called by the town's mayor, the club originally bought its boats from and kept them at Cheetham & Biffin's boatyard in Duck Mill Lane (now our current home). In 1902 the club name was changed to Bedford Rowing Club and the club colours of maroon, white & blue were adopted.
1n 1922 the club moved to Longholme boathouse shared with Bedford School and Bedford Modern School.
In 1960 BRC leased the Chetham boathouse from the Bedford Corporation. Since then we have added the club lounge and bar and, following a fire in 1984, the third gable, a gym, erg room and better changing facilties.
The club today sits on the riverfront as a continuing and ever present part of the culture and community of Bedford. Rowing has been part of Bedford for over 100 years and Bedford Rowing Club continues to produce athletes of high calibre whilst continuing to support the grass roots of the sport.
